Drawing by John Tordoff, Cambridge Drawing Society

Join us for the fourth and final Whipple Scribble of the year, where we’ll be inspired by the fascinating work of Dr Louis Auzoux.

Whether you're a seasoned artist or just curious to try something new, all abilities are welcome at this after-hours sketching session. Free to join and open to everyone, it’s a relaxed way to connect with fellow creatives in the Cambridge area.

As a medical student, Auzoux grew frustrated by the shortage of human corpses for studying anatomy. His solution? A secret papier-mâché mixture that allowed him to create reusable, “dissectable” anatomical models. He later expanded his craft to include animals and plants, producing everything from horse teeth to intricate fungi models.

At 5:30pm, our Learning Coordinator, Alison Giles, will lead a short optional introduction to the Dr Auzoux collection. This 20-minute tour offers a brief overview, but you’re also welcome to head straight to sketching if you prefer.

  • What to bring: We’ll provide basic materials such as paper and pencils. Feel free to bring your favourite sketchbook or dry media. Please note: paints and watercolours are not permitted in the galleries for conservation reasons.
  • Do I need to book? Yes, please! Booking helps us plan the space and materials. Tickets are free, and donations are warmly welcomed. Your support helps keep events like Whipple Scribble running—enabling us to offer more after-hours activities, host more public events, and continue enhancing the visitor experience. If you're no longer able to attend, please cancel your booking so that someone else can take your place.
