Permission to reproduce Whipple Museum images is dependent on the full acceptance of the terms and conditions detailed below.

We require all persons/institutions ordering images or requesting reproduction rights to sign a licence indicating agreement to these terms. The licence must be signed and returned and the fee paid in full before images can be dispatched. Permission will automatically be withdrawn should the terms be infringed.

Rights for use and reproduction of images must be applied for separately.

Use of images: Terms and conditions

  1. Permission is granted to the recipient [name] for the use of the following images for research purposes, or personal non-commercial use only, as specified: [specified images; specified use]
  2. Photographs will only be dispatched once payment has been received in full.
  3. The supply of a photograph does not carry with it the right to reproduce it in any form. A separate application must be made for reproduction rights and an additional reproduction fee paid.
  4. The recipient named above is not permitted to lend, circulate or otherwise distribute a copy of any material to any other individual, company or organisation.
  5. The Whipple Museum would appreciate a copy of any research specifically related to objects within its collection.

Reproduction of images: Terms and conditions

  1. Reproduction of items in the Museum collections from photographs other than those supplied by the Museum is strictly prohibited.
  2. Permission to reproduce is subject to all fees being paid in full. The fee payable, covers only the specific occasion detailed on the original application. The rights granted are non-exclusive. All reprints, further editions, or use of photographic material, separation film or printing plates, other than for the purpose, for which permission is granted, necessitates a new application to the Museum and payment of a further fee. The permission granted and the fee paid covers only one reproduction of the image in the product. The multiple use of an image is subject to an additional fee.
  3. Copyright in all photographs (as defined in the Copyright Act 1956 and the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988) remains the property of the Museum. The Museum requires that any publication right created by the publication of previously unpublished, out of copyright material be assigned back to the Museum.
  4. All reproductions must be credited "Whipple Museum of the History of Science, University of Cambridge". This right is asserted in accordance with sections 77 & 78 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.
  5. All objects depicted in images must be identified in the text of the publication by name and Museum accession number (in the form "Wh.0000", where 0000 is the accession number of the object).
  6. No photograph supplied for publication may be stored in a digital archive, nor be duplicated for further use. Once the publication has been finalised, any digital images that have been supplied must be deleted.
  7. No manipulation of the image, other than for colour correction, is allowed without prior approval and based on the submission of artwork detailing the proposed changes.
  8. Where a reproduction fee is waived at the discretion of the Director, the Museum requires that a copy of the publication be sent for its reference library.

Additional terms and conditions apply for reproduction in multimedia products, which are available on request.
