Museum Tours

Objects found at the Whipple Museum - Mars Globe, Papier-mâché models of horses' teeth and Mini Marcel the Human Body model.

We offer a variety of guided tours during museum opening hours, subject to staff availability. Tours usually last 30–45 minutes and include time for questions at the end. Tours are free for schools and community groups, while commercial organisations (including language schools) are charged £50 per booking.

Whipple Highlights Tour 

What is an orrery? Why is the clock chiming 13? Why would you collect and display a set of plaster horses’ teeth, some green spectacles and several hundred pocket calculators?Join us for a tour of the Whipple’s collection in 10 objects, featuring spectacular instruments, fascinating scientific stories, and links to some of Cambridge’s most famous names.

 

Black History of Science Tour

Discover the remarkable contributions made to the history of science by pioneering Black scientists. Learn about medical breakthroughs, moon missions, advances in agriculture and the art of teaching taxidermy.

 

Scientific Women Tour

Find out more about objects in our collection related to female scientists. Learn about the first woman to be paid as an astronomer in Britain, the importance of botanical drawing, mapping Mars and creative chemistry. 

 

Bridging Binaries Tour 

Our Bridging Binaries LGBTQ+ Tours explore the spectrum of identities that exist across time, place and culture in the University of Cambridge Museums. Find out about scientists from a range of times and disciplines who challenged conventions of gender and sexual identity.
